I’ll Have a Double Scoop of Ice Cream in a Cake Cone, Please!

January 3, 2023

It’s sweet, cold, and just starting to drip in the Summer sun- it’s the ultimate delicasy of childhood– Ice cream in a cake cone!

Ice Cream in a Cake Cone Block Pattern

This is my first time participating in Quilt Block Mania, and dessert is the inaugural theme of 2023.

Customize this foundation paper pieced block with your favorite ice cream flavors then mix and match the background colors. The stripes in this block remind me of beach towels and umbrellas, but you can also choose to use a single background color.

Color and Fabric

I used Painter’s Palette Solids from PBS fabrics to create this block. You don’t need big pieces of any particular fabric, so this can be a great project to use with scraps.

The blue gradient background is reminiscent of the sea, and my ice cream flavors are strawberry (my favorite as a kid) and pistachio (a current love). Using both a dark and light yellow add dimension to the cake cone.

  • Marine (Dark Background)
  • Turquoies (Medium-Dark Background)
  • Bright Aqua (Medium-Light Background)
  • Light Aqua (Light Background)
  • Petunia (Strawberry Top Scoop)
  • Island (Pistachio Bottom Scoop- OK, its technically too bright, but I’m taking some artistic license!)
  • Banana (Light Cone Color)
  • Bright Yellow (Dark Cone Color)

Who’s ready for a Second Serving?

You can never have too much ice cream, and this is the second quilt block I have designed with an ice cream theme. A few years ago I designed a quilt block for the Row by Row event inspired by a waffle cone from Jeni’s Spendid Ice Cream that was started right here in Ohio.

Absolutely love this pattern! As a child my friend and I used to go to the city park and search for pop bottles, take them to the store for the refund and buy ice cream!
And a question…your pattern is wonderful and your pressing/ironing is beyond anything I’ve been able to do. Do you have any tips to share? Thanks for sharing this pattern.
