Hand Accented QuiltCon 2023

Class Description

Combine hand and machine quilting to achieve the distinctive design and texture of hand work in a fraction of the time.  In this class we will use a machine quilted printed panel or machine quilted fabric of your choice.  The hand stitching fun will start with a running stitch. Then we will take our quilting further by exploring embroidery stitches that are conducive to quilting. A variety of thread colors and weights will be incorporated into your project.

Supply List

Optional kits are available below.

  • Basic sewing kit with small scissors/snips and a writing implement
  • Fabric pens/pencils that will mark both light and darks fabrics
  • Pre-printed panel from Spoonflower OR a solid piece of fabric OR a pieced mini quilt top of your choice (solids or reads as solids preferred)
  • 22” Square of fabric for the back of the quilt sandwich
  • 22” Square of batting (wool, cotton, or cotton/poly blend preferred)
  • Quilting Hoop (optional)
  • 2”x18” Gridded Ruler (1/8” grid)
  • Thread: Three or more colors of 12wt thread 
  • Thread conditioner (optional, but strongly recommended)
  • Thimble that fits the middle finger of your dominant hand
  • Hand Sewing/Quilting Needles, a package with a variety of sizes is recommended
If you choose to purchase supplies separately, you will need to complete the machine quilting portion of the project prior to class. Kits have the machine quilting completed for you.

Preparing for Class (If you don’t have a kit)

Create your fat quarter sized quilt sandwich with the top panel or fabric, batting and backing fabric. Stitch straight lines in one direction. Space the lines randomly between 3/4″ and 2″ apart. In at least one of the 2″ wide stripes, subdivide the the section into smaller units such as triangles. See image below for a quilting suggestion.

All Hand Accented kits include:
  • A quilt sandwich of pre-printed panel, Hobbs 80/20 batting, and backing with the machine quilting completed
  • 3 small spools of Aurifil 12 weight thread
  • 1 tin of thread gloss
  • 1 package of hand sewing needles in a variety of sizes
  • 1 white marking pencil
  • 1 Duo marking pen and eraser
  • Color printed handout
  • The gridded ruler is available as an optional add-on

Note: The thimble and optional quilting hoop are not included in the kit.
