Sew Mama Sew Giveaway Day 2016

December 7, 2016

Sew Mama Sew is once again hosting the annual giveaway day, and I am so excited to offer a small giveaway of my own this time around!  To make it even better, TWO winners will each receive two magazines and a digital pattern!

magazine-giveaway

I have been fortunate to have my work included in several magazines this year including these issues of 100 Blocks and Generation Q.  These are both packed with inspiration for all sorts of quilt-y projects!

For added fun, I will also send the winner a PDF of my pattern for my Rainbow Rotary Mini Quilt in three sizes.

Here’s how to enter:

  1. Leave a comment on this post.  I would love to hear about a specific challenge you have encountered in quilting or a technique you want to conquer in 2017.  Please note if you are inside or outside the United States. (Please see #3 for details)
  2. The winners will be determined by a random drawing.
  3. There will be TWO lucky winners of this giveaway.  One winner will be drawn from all entries.  The second winner will be drawn from US entries only.  (I wish I could do an international drawing for both, but shipping costs can get out of control so easily)
  4. The drawing is open through Sunday, December 11 at 5pm PST (8pm EST)
  5. The winners will be announced by Wednesday, December 14, and prizes will be shipped by Friday December 16.  The winners will be notified by email and listed on the blog.  It is each winner’s responsibility to respond with their mailing address by 11:59pm on Thursday, December 15.  If I do not receive this information by this time, another winner will be drawn.
  6. Make sure you check out all of the other fabulous giveaways linked up at Sew Mama Sew!

Update:  Thank you so much for entering!  I normally do my best to respond to comments, but due to the volume of giveaway posts I won’t be able to respond individually.  Your answers will help me determine what to blog about in the coming year!  Thank you!

My main challenge for this year has been to try to become active again in sewing and quilting. I haven’t done much for many years, due to life circumstances and physical health problems. Now that I am on a disability retirement, I want to learn the limits of what I can and cannot do — and to push them where I can.

What a great mini! That block is pretty awesome looking.

Anyway, I think my standard answer is that I want to tackle more free motion quilting, but I actually did quite a lot of it in the past year and even though I’ve got a long way to go, it’s not quite such a dire thing that needs working on anymore. Probably applique… that one is always tough for me but I’d still love to get good at it.

Due to a chronic illness, I have energy limitations as well as some physical/pain limitations. And this means one of my challenges is recognizing and accepting my own limits–not setting goals that are too huge, not jumping into projects that are too big for the deadline, not being unrealistic (too many projects that can never, ever be done in time for Christmas…). Too late to learn that lesson in time for this holiday, but when I set my goals for 2017 I am going to try to be realistic *and* optimistic.

My biggest challenge this year has been completing a quilt for a commission that ended up needing to be much bigger than I thought. I had to take the binding off and add 15″ to each side. I am doing this by adding a strip of white with designs quilted in to go with the rest of the quilt. It’s adorable but taking me forever. Thank goodness my friend is being patient.

My most recent challenge involves learning to machine quilt. I’m quilting a queen-size quilt on my machine (not a long arm) and it is heavy to maneuver. It’s forcing me to get familiar with free motion quilting so that’s good. I also had white thread in my bobbin and wanted brown so I’m going to be picking out a LOT of stitches! Thankfully the quilting part (not the picking part) is going fairly quickly.

I’m a US resident and have followed your blog for the past couple of years. I’ve just signed up for a ruler quilting class on the domestic machine on Craftsy. That will be my challenge in 2017. Of course it will also mean investing in some equipment. I do some machine quilting with a walking foot and free motion. I can only do up to lap size without my shoulders crying “foul” for weeks on end.

I like your rainbow mini. For 2017 I’d like to get better with FMQ and fabric selection in general. Thanks!

I think my biggest quilting challenge is myself. Need to take on harder techniques instead of sticking to the safe.

My main challenge this year has been making “me-time” for me to actually sew. I have an 18 month old who became mobile at 7 months old (basically right a New Years 2016) so I feel like all my sewing time has become mom time! I’m been better about carving out time for myself the last couple of months though so hopefully I can continue that!

I’m in the US! Love that mini quilt!

This past year, I told myself I’d learn to paper-piece and I did! I made several projects and enjoyed each one! Next year, I’m moving onto hexies. I think I’m the last sewist to attempt one, right? I always love a good challenge. (I’m in the U.S.A.)

I am international. What I really want to try out in 2017 is illustration sewing and sewing curves, lol!

My challenge this year will be to grab those smaller periods of time available to me to sew rather than feeling I must wait until I have a large chunk of time to devote. I have to constantly remind myself that 10-15 minutes here and there do ultimately make a difference! Thanks so much for the chance!

I have somehow managed to keep the quilting tempo going through 2016, greatest challenge would be to keep it going in 2017 and learn curved piecing.

I want to make a quilt using raw silk. Also I have had fabric for ever for a log cabin quilt. Think I finally found the right pattern.
