The end of April was a busy time for both me and my quilts! Stripe Club and Zoo Family Portrait were both on display at the AQS show in Paducah, Kentucky while Oscillation was at Mancuso’s Quiltfest in Greenville, South Carolina. All of the quilts are now safely back at home, and they all returned with judging sheets. Would you like to see them?

Zoo Family Portrait
AQS allows for a 25 word description to accompany each submission. Unfortunately, these descriptions do not appear in the show book, but I thought I would go ahead and share mine here:
Photographs taken at the Columbus Zoo over four years are combined to create a foundation paper pieced animal family portrait using 25 colorful fabrics.
In addition to the maker, maker’s home town, and title of the quilt, the show book includes:
- Size of the quilt: 58″ x 84″
- Quilting Method: Movable Machine, Computer-Assisted Stitch Software* (this is a fancy way of saying stitch regulation- computerized designs use a different term)
- Quilting Technique: Piecing (Machine), Piecing (Paper), Quilting (Free-Motion)
*Note: When making my most recent entry, the computer-assisted stitch software option was no longer listed
I was particularly glad to see that this group of judges liked the quilting. Last year a virtual quilt show did open judging via Zoom, and those judges really hated the quilting choices I made. Some things are subjective, but you rarely get such drastically differing evaluations.
Stripe Club
25 words doesn’t give you a lot of information, but here is my description of stripe club:
All solid fabrics are cut and pieced into stripes as narrow as 1/8” to form the basis for this semi-improvisational design.
In addition to the maker, maker’s home town, and title of the quilt, the show book includes:
- Size of the quilt: 82″ x 79″
- Quilting Method: Hand, Movable Machine, Computer-Assisted Stitch Software (this is a fancy way of saying stitch regulation- computerized designs use a different term)
- Quilting Technique: Decorative Stitching, Matchstick Quilting, Piecing (Machine), Quilting (Free-Motion), Quilting (Hand)

Oscillation
The Quiltfest show book keeps the listings simple with the quilt number, title, and quilter name.
Each quilt show tends to have a standardized judging sheet, so each one will look different, although the included information is nearly the same. In some smaller shows with only one judge, that judge will sometimes supply their own judging sheet to work from. Quiltfest uses a ranking system along with comments, while AQS sticks to a comment only format.
One of my goals in sharing judging results is to increase the transparency of the quilt show entering process. I hope that this has been helpful to those of you thinking about entering one of these quilt shows.
