Ball Drop Starburst WIP

February 24, 2015

I have been busily paper piecing away on this quilt over the past couple weeks, and I am really excited to share the finished top.  This quilt was one of my big goals (#16) for the First Quarter Finish Along, so I am really happy to be this far along.  I was hoping to run outside to take a photo of the quilt top out in the snow, but the frigid wind kept trying to blow it away, so I had to settle for indoor photographs today.

The close up photos do a slightly better job of showing off the fabrics and colors.

Quilt Top Detail

This quilt was inspired by the first mini quilt in my Mini Quilt Mania Series.  I loved the pattern so much that I scaled up the blocks so I could do this generously sized lap quilt.  At this point in the process the quilt top measures approximately 53″x64″  This is the original quilt which measured 12.5″ x 14.25″ when quilted and bound.  I was a little concerned that I may not like my design as well with the scale adjusted, but I think that the size translation is working pretty well.

The fabric I ordered for the backing finally arrived yesterday so this afternoon I’ll baste this up and start quilting.  I’m hoping to share the finish in a week or two!

I’ll be linking this post up to WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced, and Fresh Sewing Day at Lily’s Quilts.  Please check out all of the fantastic works in progress shared there!

Both your mini and pieced top look fantastic. I am drawn to the lighter gray fabrics in the pieced top, but just barely – and I am wondering if they appear lighter because the pieces are a bit larger and you get more print visible? Yay for your backing being ready for you when you need it, and I look forward to seeing how you finish this quilt. 🙂

the grey…sashing, would you call it?…is just so perfect with these colours and fabrics. Can I ask what the fabric is? I’d love to get some. This is a gorgeous quilt.

I recognise some cotton and steel in there. Is there Caroline Friedlander too?

wow! you’ve made a lot of progress, puts my EPP progress to shame, 🙂
I love the stars, and the colors you used against the grey. The design looks great in a larger quilt. I’ve been wondering the same about a mini I’ve been working on–I’d love to make 11 more and make a lap-sized quilt top, but it seems so daunting when I could finish the mini right now!

What a great quilt. I love the colors and the pattern is so intriguing. Great job. I love seeing other people finishing projects. It always inspired me to start less and finish more.

I worry too when I enlarge–I’ve had a couple disappointments. But yours is working well! I like the stars behind bars look. One would think the brights would push forward, but the gray holds its own and stays front. I can often be surprised by visual effects.

[…] last week, I was finishing up the top for this starburst quilt, and I couldn’t help saving some of the trimmings from squaring up the sides of the quilt. […]
