Central Ohio MQG Community Outreach Quilt

April 8, 2022

Each year the Modern Quilt Guild puts out a call for Community Outreach Quilts for a special exhibit at QuiltCon. The MQG provides a color palette and theme, and the guilds or groups of individual members develop a design and make the quilts.

The theme for QuiltCon 2022 was angles and this was the color palette.

My guild, the Central Ohio MQG, selects our design each year by requesting design submissions from members and then having the full membership vote on the quilt they want to make and present.

I tend to draw inspiration from my surroundings, and since our guild is based in the state capital, I thought an abstract cityscape would capture the theme of angles well. The design started as a rough line drawing done in AutoCad Lt. To help facilitate construction, all of the seams in the quilt are vertical, horizontal, or at a 45 degree angle.

We were allowed to use variations on the main color palettes, so I used the palette color and a dark version of that color throughout the design to create a feeling of depth and dimension. I added color to the design using Adobe Photoshop.

When it came time to vote, I was stunned that my design was selected. Full disclosure- I voted for another design! There were so many awesome choices this year!

I was in charge of preparing the pattern, but was not directly involved in the actual quilt construction. I wasn’t certain how many people would be piecing the top, so I divided the quilt into 67 simple blocks. Many of the blocks had just one or two seams. I wrote an instruction sheet for each block similar to the one below.

The blocks were grouped into units, and each volunteer constructed that group of blocks. Lissa cut and assembled the kits and completed the final construction of the quilt top. Here is an in-process view from her design wall.

Kathy did the quilting and selected an angular motif to continue the theme.

Becky did the binding and label to complete the quilt, and we were able to get this group photo at a sew-day before shipping the quilt off to QuiltCon!

Where it looked great! It was fun to see all of the different interpretations of the same theme and color palette.
