The official colors for 2022 were announced this week! The two big ones for quilters tend to be Pantone and Kona, and this year they both selected a version of violet.
Cosmos, the Kona color of the year, leans to the red-violet end of the color wheel and is a particular favorite of mine. This one already shows up in my quilts with some regularity, so it will be fun to feature it in some projects in the coming year.
The Pantone color of the year, Very Peri, leans toward the blue-violet portion of the color wheel, and has been very difficult to find in recent years. About ten years ago I designed a set that required violet leaning blue drapes and the re-upholstering of a sofa. I was nearing a panic trying to find the right fabric until I found a shop that still had some stock from the 1990’s with fabrics in just the right color. This was when I learned just how cyclical color is. If you love a color of fabric, go ahead and stock up so you will have it when you need it!
Pantone describes Very Peri as:
Displaying a carefree confidence and a daring curiosity that animates our creative spirit, inquisitive and intriguing PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri helps us to embrace this altered landscape of possibilities, opening us up to a new vision as we rewrite our lives. Rekindling gratitude for some of the qualities that blue represents complemented by a new perspective that resonates today, PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri places the future ahead in a new light.https://www.pantone.com/color-of-the-year-2022
I frequently combine both the Pantone and Kona colors of the year into a single project, so I think it’s fun to explore a range of color palette possibilities. Most of the time I find my projects with these colors are the most successful if one color is more dominant than the other, and frequently the added colors in the palette end up as small accents. Here are a few palettes that I have been experimenting with:
I still haven’t decided exactly what I’ll do to highlight these colors in the coming year, but I can’t wait to see what you all come up with!

Your article was quite interesting. I’ve always recognized the cyclical nature of the colors available for my quilting desires. Probably that’s why my stash had become overwhelming!! But you went much further than some of the articles I’ve read, discussing the color chart and identifying ways of incorporating both lines in one project. Thank you.

It is interesting to see how these colors look when combined with others. These colors look very versatile.
